With the month of March, Spring is coming, first warm, shiny days, the blooming of flowers and ..the feared parasites!

Their appearing is not always punctual, as it was some years ago. The recent climate changes have of course influenced on humidity and temperature, therefore it is not always necessary to start with the anti-parasite treatments only according to the calendar if there are not real needs, like it is also better not to stop only because autumn arrives, forgetting that this way we may breed parasite colonies in the warmth of of our home (typical case are fleas).

The most feared and fought parasites are the ectoparasites, that are all the ones that stay on the skin of the animal: the well known fleas and ticks and the less famous lice and mites.
Then there are the ones that live in the internal organs, better known like worms, that can be flat like the tapeworm or round like the roundworms, hookworms and heartworm but also Coccidia and Giardia.
I personally always study the subject before any prescription. Age, health conditions, presence of illnesses or allergies, can influence the diagnosis. Then I verify the food, the habits of lief, if the animal is sedentary and lives mostly at home or if he has a garden where to run; the holiday place, the contact with other animals or humans with possible organic decay, that are all the necessary information in order not to give everything to all, but to anyone what is needed.

We remind that the pesticides are products to handle with care and attention and that they can cause collateral effects even after many years.
Another aspect to evaluate is the way of dosing that can vary according to the product.
Pills, drops, paste to give through the oral way.
Collars to be located at a distance of about one finger from the skin and never at direct contact with the neck.
Sprays, much used some time ago and now a little bit out o fuse, that rest valid for emergencies if used with all the warnings indicated on the packaging.
Only-1-dose pipettes according to the weight of the subjects that are very functional by very expensive and sometimes they can cause allergic reactions in the area of the application.
Injectable products to be used only once a season and for which the prescription of the veterinary is needed.
Sponging with pesticides are almost disappeared.

It we use a new products, above all the Spot-on it is necessary to pay attention to possible local allergic reactions that can appear with a strong itching or fall of fur in the area of application. Any reaction must be noticed to the veterinary.
Adverse reactions can appear also after the use of pills or pastes. In case the dose has not been take correctly episodes of vomit and dysentery can happen. In this case evaluate with the doctor if to try again or completely change the product.
In case of reaction to the use of the pesticide in the pipette, you could try again by living a minimal quantity and wait for a couple of hours. If there are no allergic reaction, you can then complete the giving of the whole pipette.

Another easy but neglected necessary precaution is the one to read carefully the warnings above all when you use new products even if similar to the ones used since ever. Let’s not forget to use the good send and let’s protect our animal against a real danger, like it is right, considering always that everyone is different. Some pesticides mustn’t be used on cats who must not even get in touch in case of living together with dogs with treatment.

Others should be avoided on puppies or on sick animals and above never abound with these product, let’s use a few a never combined together, the reactions could be very serious, but above all don’t make anxiety to protect your beloved against all the “bad” take you. Medicines themselves sometimes are worse and put the health of your loved furry at risk.

At the end, let’s pay attention also to the pesticide we use on us in our home or against insects, whose toxicity we often underestimate. In these cases the reactions could be immediate and very serious, and in the worst cases fatal.
