Have you heard a dog snoring? Obviously all the dogs’ owners with pets having reduced and flattened face: that are Carlino, English Bull Dog Inglese, French Bull (Bouledogue français), King Charles SpanielBoxer.

The syndrome is due to anatomic characteristics and then functional of those subject that, for not natural selection, has brought to an exaggeration of some genetic characteristics. In fact in these races of dogs the harmonic development of the bone part exclusively is interrupted much before that the one of the soft tissues it contains.

Here it is then the characteristic form of the nose cane, completely absent, the presence of a lot of skin facial wrinkles, small and embedded nostrils, until the presence of small splits only.

Eyes always show ectropion, the mandible is prognathus with chewing and consequently digestive defects. All this is from outside but problems become more serious internally.

Such a small facial structure is not able to contain structure destined to wider and longer spaces, that’s why we will have an exaggerated soft palate that will bock the passage of air anytime our friend will have to breath. Think about how they felt in these months of intense hot! To breath, for these races of dogs, will become almost impossible (until causing frequent episode of syncope).

As a consequence, the snoring is not a nice attitude of some races but a serious alarm signal that you need to watch: it means that our dog doesn’t take air enough because he has got one or more blocks at its passage.

This serious difficulty provokes further bad respiratory conditions and therefore cardiac ones. The respiratory and costal muscles are obliged to make an excessive effort that can causes pressure and lung alteration with possible following alterations in the respiratory system.

After a detailed medical visit that will confirm the diagnosis of BAOIS, the only therapy will the be the surgical one, sometimes limited to the correction of the nose opening ( called “alapessi”).
We may often proceed with complicated, long and very painful intervention, until the shortening of the soft palate and correction of trachea.
These interventions will be made in young age to grant a proper quality of life.

This is what I can suggest: you have to be aware that these puppies from the livestock may have a not easy life for these conditions. Therefore make correct evaluations when you decide to take one.
