Ihave often let you know in my articles, the usefulness of the collection of urine to detect running pathologies. We don’t always know how to proceed.
First of all we have to act in a different way if we are in front of a dog or a cat.
However we have to collect as much less polluted urine as possible, therefore don’t collect it from the floor, neither from a clean surface.
In case of dogs, in order to let it occur it is needed:
- To eliminate the fur around the genitals and disinfect carefully the skin in the nearby so that the sample is not polluted by feces or saliva materials. .
- To have a sterile container, the ones for human are perfect; you can make test first with a plastic glass so that the dog is not scared just in that moment, running away.
- Once collected the urine, let’s take it immediately to a test veterinary lab suggested by the doctor.
For the cat it is different.
Given the use of the litter box and the position of the cat during the urination, you can proceed in different ways.
You can have him used to hold a kind of a container between the legs or to buy the proper litter made of plastic small balls and substitute it to the sand, after washing the litter box. In the litter box a collection pipe and a test tube are included.
If this method wouldn’t be possible, you will have to use the enema or, to get a sterile urine to get it directly in the bladder in order to avoid contamination by external agents or injuries due to the enema. These two procedure have to be made by the veterinary and in the proper structure. The patient will have to be at least sedate to be able to proceed with the test without he feels pain or get agitated and therefore makes the operation useless.
No matter how you collect it, the urine will have to be delivered shortly.
If it is not possible, contact your veterinary for a suggestion on the best way to preserve it. Generally you only have to put it in the fridge, reminding to write on the test tube the day and the time of the collection, to avoid uncertain results or not correct values.
Then the doctor will decide which test to make: only chemical, of the sediment, with the possible research of crystals, bacteriological or the research of “ suspect” cells.
