In our job of veterinary doctors we have to face anything. Sometimes during a visit, it happens that the owner of a patient of ours tells u s to have given some medicines at home or suggested by friends at their own venture. That  is very  wrong! Such arbitrary giving  of medicines ( above all created for humans) can provoke serious damages for different reasons.

Some medicines aren’t tolerate by some species or races at all, a classic example is the use of the Acetil salicic acid in the cat. The molecule is dangerous both in its classic form ( the famous Aspirin) and in association with others, for example many products against the flu.

The can can’t eliminate it from his body because of the lack of a protein present in the liver, the UGT1A6. If assumed, there will be a dangerous accumulation that can provoke death in case o fan excessive dose.

Always talking of medicines for humans given to cats, some sedatives belonging to the group of “ benzodiazepines”  can have a contrary effect to their actions, that is to transform in dangerous neurologic stimulants.

Even the most part of FANS (the most common anti-inflammatory) can’t be given for the collateral effect they have. The gastric ulcers can cause such serious bleeding to provoke death.

Also the common paracetamol, present in all houses to decrease fever, can cause serious emetic anemia sometimes mortal  in the dog.

There are also medicines thought for an animal species and not for other. Even a harmless product for some subjects could be dangerous for other, for example the anti parasitic:

  • The Pyrethrum, a common substance used as a repellent in the anti parasitic collar for dogs, it extremely dangerous for the cat!
  • This substance could have collateral effects only in some dog races, for example the ivermectina, a common substance use in some anti parasitic MUST not be used in the Scottish Shepherd commonly known as Collie.
  • Its consumption provoke hyper-salivation, ataxia, blindness, breath failure and, in the serious complications can provoke death.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Pay a lot of attention to your pest when there are pathologies, always consult your trust doctor; it sometimes happens to me to intervene because “ since the pill was small I have given 2”. Don’t do these evaluations! Contact the veterinary both for the product to use and for the doses and the age of the patient.

Animals are not “ small humans” and the collateral effect could be dangerous and irreversible.
